Newell Recycling, one of the largest recyclers and processors of recycled metals
in the United States held its grand opening at its plant in Garden City.

With the flip of a switch, Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue helped Chatham County
celebrate the grand opening of its newest facility- Newell Recycling. The state
of the art metal recycling plant sits on 40-acres of land in Garden City off of
highway 307 and a road that bares the Governor’s name. Also named after the
Governor, a six-thousand horsepower shredder- capable of grinding an automobile
and separating it’s parts in less than fifteen seconds. The shredded steel is
then exported to facilities all over the world. The metal produced by the
shredder can be converted into new metals more easily and cost-effectively than
mining the earth, which saves precious resources.

With the opening of the new plant comes fifty additional jobs to the area. But
Governor Perdue says that’s just one of the many benefits. “These guys are going
to eat somewhere. They’re going to help support restaurants and retail
outlets…those jobs near it flourishes throughout the economy and that’s what’s
good about all of this.“

Bobby Triesh, vice-president and director of Ferrous Operations of Newell
Recycling, says part of their decision to a open facility in our area was to
take advantage of world markets for recyclable commodities and export to new
markets around the world. “We were recycling before recycling was cool. My
grandfather jokes that he was just trying to put food on the table. But it’s
also a job that you can feel proud in… that you’re helping conserve resources.“

Newell Recycling is a family owned and operated business, spanning five
generations. Founded in San Antonio, Texas in 1935 by Alton Scott Newell, Newell
Recycling is recognized as a worldwide leader in ferrous and non-ferrous metal
recycling, research, and technology. Newell Recycling currently operates two
shredder plants in Atanta and one in Savannah as well as other recycling
facilities throughout the southeast. The Savannah site is now the largest.
