More convenient, frequent and expensive recycling collection is in store for
Peninsula homes and businesses after a proposed recycling center recently
received the last endorsement it needed.

After close to four years of debate and discussion, the city of Belmont, Calif.,
became the eighth city to approve a plan to build a recycling center. According
to the San Jose (California) Mercury News, Belmont was the eighth of 12 cities
that make up the South Bayside Waste Management Authority that needed to approve
the issuance of a construction bonds that were needed to build the plant. It is
expected a total of $65 million in bonds will be used for the construction.

The cities will formally approve the specifics of the financing when the waste
authority presents them within the next two months before construction can begin
this summer. The Shoreway Environmental Center is slated to open in January 2011
with the new services taking effect at that time.

The 70,100-square-foot facility will be a substantial upgrade from the obsolete
48,000-square-foot recycling center built in 1968, and has been designed to be a
single stream facility.
